Backstory
The Eco Just Food Network (EJFN) is an organization that connects youth and community members with local food providers to assist in helping vulnerable communities grow, harvest, and have access to healthy food. As a new organization, their website needed a complete overhaul.
The Problem
A redesign of the homepage and “Time Bank” function of the system is necessary due to their outdated look. Observations and feedback from staff have highlighted the need for an improved user interface and experience. Through this redesign, the system can be brought up-to-date with modern UI/UX practices, ensuring that users are able to access and utilize the features of the system with greater ease and efficiency.
The Solution
Accessible & Engaging
Our objective for the redesign was to make our user experience more accessible and engaging for our audience.
To create a design that allowed for a balanced blend of informative content and visually appealing graphics which would draw in our users.
We worked to make the EJFN website more streamlined and organized so that users could easily find the information they were looking for and feel engaged.
Research
User Testing
When redesigning this non-profit, we wanted to understand the needs and goals of our stakeholders. We conducted interviews to gain insight into their recent experiences with the website and to determine what they would like to see changed in the redesign. Through these interviews, we could identify areas of improvement and uncover specific objectives that the stakeholders wanted us to prioritize. This process allowed us to create a website tailored to the stakeholders' needs and provided them with a better overall experience.
Interviews
Based on the multiple interviews we have conducted with EJFN workers and potential users alike, we have successfully pinpointed the main problems:
SWOT Analysis
-
Time Bank
-
Mobile farming and food work units
-
A well-focused structure
-
Having multiple & modern social platforms
Persona
Using data from user tests, we created a persona to better visualize our users' pain points and needs.
Storyboard
In this storyboard, we are displaying the story of our persona, Sage, and what happens to her after she discovers our website.
Ideations
Sketches
We began the ideation process by sketching our ideas on paper in order to better visualize how the form would look on mobile and desktop devices.
Hi-fi Prototype
We built our high-fidelity prototype using Figma. We have overhauled and revamped the website based on our design principles. Modernizing yet not overwhelming the user and having a stronger information architecture with a clear visual design. For simplicity's sake, we chose to stick with a single typeface (Work Sans).

We decided to focus mainly on the user flow for this project because, from our user interviews, navigation was the biggest issue and information architecture.
